Perhaps more than any other post on this blog, the one which really got me fascinated by Auckland’s transport future and convinced me I “wanted in” was a post by Nick R about how driverless trains – the kind used by Vancouver’s Skytrain system that I’m so fond of – could have a role in making rail to the North Shore far more affordable and feasible than perhaps we have ever thought before.…

Matt’s post the other day on the state of Britomart’s escalator and a piece of broken glass that had gone weeks without being fixed seemed to finally spur Auckland Transport into some action – with word filtering through that both things have now been fixed.…

The Case against the Eastern Link

Talk of cutting back on aspects of the CRL raises a lot of concern for many people, especially those on this blog and that is completely understandable. There may be a good case for delaying some of the stations which is something I think should at least be investigated but there has been more opposition on what should happen with the eastern link.…

CBD Parking scheme joins the 21st century

A really positive looking announcement by Auckland Transport today that they’re looking at completely overhauling the way on-street parking is managed in the city centre so that it turns over more regularly and isn’t used as much for long-stay parking. Paying a premium for walkability

Another really interesting article from The Atlantic Cities, this time looking at the price premium people are increasingly willing to pay to locate in a walkable neighbourhood: Instinct probably tells you that you’ll pay a lot more to live in a downtown apartment, above a grocery store, next to a bar strip and within walking distance of your work place than you will to settle into a comparable home in a bedroom community outside of the city.…
