The future role for driverless light-metro
Perhaps more than any other post on this blog, the one which really got me fascinated by Auckland’s transport future and convinced me I “wanted in” was a post by Nick R about how driverless trains – the kind used by Vancouver’s Skytrain system that I’m so fond of – could have a role in making rail to the North Shore far more affordable and feasible than perhaps we have ever thought before.…
Guest Post: Save The Capital Connection
This is a guest post from reader Louis Mayo.
Although this is the Auckland Transport Blog, it is good to give some attention to transport issues in other parts of the country. You may or may not be aware that the “Capital Connection” is under threat of cancellation.…
What needs fixing?
Matt’s post the other day on the state of Britomart’s escalator and a piece of broken glass that had gone weeks without being fixed seemed to finally spur Auckland Transport into some action – with word filtering through that both things have now been fixed.…
Ploughing snow Kiwirail style
Very cool video from down by Arthurs Pass of Kiwirail clearing snow off the tracks from the recent dumping that the South island received.…
The Case against the Eastern Link
Talk of cutting back on aspects of the CRL raises a lot of concern for many people, especially those on this blog and that is completely understandable. There may be a good case for delaying some of the stations which is something I think should at least be investigated but there has been more opposition on what should happen with the eastern link.…
CBD Parking scheme joins the 21st century
A really positive looking announcement by Auckland Transport today that they’re looking at completely overhauling the way on-street parking is managed in the city centre so that it turns over more regularly and isn’t used as much for long-stay parking. Here’s the full media release:
Auckland Transport plans to make changes to on-street parking in the central city.…
Why is Britomart broken and not being fixed?
Why does it take so long to get things fixed at Britomart. For about the last three weeks one of three escalators down to the platforms has been out of action. This isn’t the first time we have seen such length periods and I am yet to hear an explanation as to why it takes so long.…
Test your bus lane knowledge
Auckland Transport have been looking into ways to make it a bit easier to work out if you’re abiding by bus and T2/T3 lane rules – and they have a nifty a bit daft little game to help test your knowledge of the lanes.…
What to do about Grafton post CRL
One of the perennial issues that comes up with the CRL, is what to do about Grafton and Newmarket. These two stations have become pretty popular for those coming from the west and large numbers, perhaps up to 40% of people on some trains, disembark there.…
Paying a premium for walkability
Another really interesting article from The Atlantic Cities, this time looking at the price premium people are increasingly willing to pay to locate in a walkable neighbourhood:
Instinct probably tells you that you’ll pay a lot more to live in a downtown apartment, above a grocery store, next to a bar strip and within walking distance of your work place than you will to settle into a comparable home in a bedroom community outside of the city.…
