CBD Tunnel Review released soon?
The answer to an OIA request I made to the Ministry of Transport about – among other things – the work they’d done in relation to the CBD Rail Tunnel (largely their contribution to its review) suggest that the release of this review document is possibly not too far away.…
Complete streets
This is a fantastic video from Streetfilms on New York City and their approach to remaking streets as “complete streets” over the past few years. The key with complete streets is providing mobility and accessibility for all types of transport: pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and cars – instead of cars and pretty much nothing else.…
Guest Post: Why does Labour ignore transport so badly?
This is another Guest Post by occasional blog commenter Peter
There was a lot of response and reaction to my blog post earlier this week, which criticised most political parties for either their transport policy or their general image. I ruffled a few feathers and had a few good debates in the comments.…
Auckland Transport’s take on the GPS
My opinions of the draft Government Policy Statement for transport funding were articulated in this recent post. Papers from Auckland Transport’s May board meeting outline the issues of concern to them in the document. Helpfully, Auckland Transport provide some useful tables that more clearly highlight areas of funding that are proposed to increase and decrease over the next 10 years.…
Tactics for the second HOP changeover
At the moment we’re going through a rather challenging process of changing over from Go Rider cards to HOP cards on all NZ Bus services. North Star buses swapped over a couple of weeks back, Go West and Waka Pacific will change over this coming weekend, while Metrolink and Link Buses will make the swap in a couple of weeks time.…
Transport in the Budget
In what is otherwise a fairly dark budget, it seems that transport – even rail – has got off reasonably lightly. Of course unsurprisingly there’s nothing in the budget about the CBD Rail Tunnel: the government’s review of that project seems to have gone on the back-burner – and the Ministry of Transport is even refusing to release to me any information on the work they’ve done in relation to the project so far this year.…
The City Centre Master Plan
It’s certainly a busy time at the moment for big long term planning documents in Auckland. As well as the much talked about “Auckland Spatial Plan”, Auckland Council has now released a discussion document on a “City Centre Master Plan.”
I have talked a bit about the Master Plan in the past – when it was in its earlier stages of formulation.…
Does Manukau City really need more carparks?
An article in today’s NZ Herald notes that Mayor Len Brown reckons Manukau City needs more carparks – and the council is going to help fund them:
Mr Brown, who has put public transport at the top of his to-do list, yesterday expressed enthusiasm for investing ratepayers’ money in more carparks.…
Vision of a car free Queen Street
The Eye on Auckland blog has some great renders about what a car free Queen Street, with only tram tracks running up and down it, might look like: This looks up Queen Street from the corner with Customs Street. Nice deer sculpture!…
Parnell station a reality?
I haven’t seen it confirmed elsewhere yet, but the well informed Auckland Trains blog says that Parnell station – on the site of the Mainline Steam sheds – is to proceed.
Auckland Transport’s CEO David Warburton has confirmed the go-ahead for the planned new station.…
